Wedgewood Village Amusement Park grew out of the love for golf. In this brief history, some things will change as you and others correct me!

Here's the way I saw it!

Wedgewood was started initially as a driving range at May Ave. and 59th. It was actually called Duffy's. Grown-ups would come to drive golf balls, but at this time, many women were gaining interest in the game. Well, what to do with the kids? Maurice Woods decided to entertain those kids with kiddie rides. The kiddie rides grew popular and traffic to the rides increased to the point where Mr. Woods thought this could be something. The story I was told is that the term "Wedgewood" came from the idea you used a wedge of wood to hit a golf ball. Made sense....hence, the name.

Well of course, being as popular as the place became, the park was in need of growth. The new location was west on Northwest Expressway just west of 63rd. The land was originally farm land (not actually in OKC). Mr. Woods bought the Northern side of the plot along side of Northwest Expressway. This would become the final grounds for the park.

The park opened in 1958. I'm sketchy on the details, but judging by what I have learned and the pics I've obtained...It was BIG. I mean, back in 1958, ya had Split T for burgers...maybe Charcoal Oven, Springlake Park (hurtin) and Frontier City (to be revived). What Wedgewood turned into was the largest if not the most prevelant Concert and amusement venue in OKC.

America has enjoyed a lot of great parks over the years, such as, The Palicades, Riverview, Coney Island, Cedar Point etc. But, Wedgewood had a mystic about it...short lived and yet unforgetable!!!
