From A Previous Employee
I was employed with Wedgewood Village in
the mid-sixties as arcade technician and Tornado (Roller Coaster)
structural technician. About 50-60% of the arcade games
were mechanical. Electric pinball machines were very popular
with the kids and young adults.
The bumper-cars were in a large odd shaped building at
the very south end of the park that butted up to the Northwest
Expressway. We moved the bumper cars into a new building
that was built just for them directly in front of the Dub Adams
Hickory Kitchen restaurant. The old bumper car building was
remodeled and became the "penny arcade". Maurice Woods
(owner of Wedgewood Village) bought tons of used arcade
machines, we would reconditioned as good as possible and
installed them.
Batman and his arch enemies were very popular at the time.
Caesar Ramero, as the Joker, came to Wedgewood a few times.
We put him in an air conditioned tent close to the arcade, they
charged $.50 a head to go in and see him. Johnny Cash came to Wedgewood many times.
Bob Campbell was chief electrician and I was his helper.
we set-up the sound equipment for everybody that came through. Even though
I got to meet Johnny Cash almost every time he appeared in the pavilion in the mid-sixties,
I was just someone that helped make things work for him.
This is just some of the memories I have of Wedgewood Village
as an employee and as a customer before and after I worked there.
